In the spirit of National Chicken Wing Day tomorrow (March 22nd) – yes it’s a thing! And over 300 restaurants are offering a 50% off voucher to celebrate the occasion (including Bird and Honest Burgers; there’s still time to sign up for yours {here}) – I thought it was only appropriate to compile a list of places that offer gluten free chicken and chips in London. That much loved fast food is virtually always out of reach for us gluten free people, but thankfully there are a few restaurants around to save the day!
And without further ado, here are some that I’ve tried so far.
(I will keep on updating this post as I discover more)
My gluten free chicken and chips guide:
1. BIRD
Locations: Islington, Camden & Canary Wharf
Food: fried chicken and chips with a choice of sauces and glazes
Gluten free status: suitable for Coeliacs / excellent knowledge of cross-contamination – all their fried chicken is gluten free (but not all of the sauces and glazes so check with them first)
Highlight: coconut jerk and katsu curry sauces
Bird has to be the ultimate gluten free chicken and chips around. It’s the only classic deep fried chicken place that I know of who caters for us gluten free people which makes them quite special to me. All their fried chicken is gluten free, prepared and cooked in a separate area to avoid cross-contamination and no gluten goes into their chip fryer! Note: the Camden branch is the only exception to this regarding the chips, so I would recommend the Islington and Shoreditch branches all the way instead!

2. NANDO’S
Locations: multiple locations around London (and the UK)
Food: flame frilled peri peri chicken | African-Portuguese inspired
Gluten free status: suitable for Coeliacs / excellent knowledge of cross contamination
Who doesn’t love a cheeky Nando’s?! As gluten free chicken and chips goes, Nando’s is a Coeliac’s best friend. They have a tonne of gluten free options, an excellent knowledge of cross-contamination and they’re literally everywhere around the country! Which makes them a life saver at times. And the food is simple, but undeniably delicious.

3. ROOSTERS PIRI PIRI
Locations: multiple locations around London (and the UK) – view full list {here}
Food: flame grilled chicken
Gluten free status: suitable for Coeliacs / excellent knowledge of cross-contamination
This lesser known chain is much like Nando’s in many respects. Their focus is on flame grilled chicken with sides, nearly everything (besides the obvious bread stuff) is gluten free and they have a full understanding of cross-contamination. No gluten goes into their fryers so yes the chips are gluten free too! It’s the perfect chicken and chips takeaway and somewhat of an addiction for us since we discovered it. They even stay opened until very late on weekends (around 3am), meaning we finally have somewhere to grab food after a night out. P.S.: It’s really cheap too!

4. HONEST BURGERS
Locations: multiple locations around London (and the UK) – view full list {here}
Food: amazing burgers & more
Gluten free status: suitable for Coeliacs / excellent knowledge of cross-contamination
This restaurant chain is yet another Coeliac’s best friend. Virtually everything on the menu is gluten free (besides the obvious burger buns, but they also have delicious gluten free ones available) and they have a great knowledge of cross-contamination. While Honest Burgers are mostly, as the name suggests, about burgers! They also have other options on their menu including yummy BBQ chicken wings which, along with their delicious rosemary fries, easily satisfy a chicken and chips craving!

5. NICHE
Locations: Angel (Islington)
Food: British comfort foods
Gluten free status: 100% gluten free
Very popular on the gluten free scene and for good reasons, this little gem is right by Angel tube station in North London and completely gluten free! And it just so happens that my absolute favourite from their menu is the ‘NFC’ fried chicken and chips. A must if you ever go to Niche! ?

6. LEON
Locations: multiple locations around London (and the UK) – view full list {here}
Food: Healthy(ish) fast food chain
Gluten free status: Nearly all gluten free / suitable for Coeliacs / excellent knowledge and cross-contamination
No matter where you are in Central London, you can usually find a Leon nearby. They have a tonnes of gluten free (Coeliac safe) options and are basically a life saver when it comes to gluten free food on the go. They have delicious (including many healthy) choices along with some treats.
And good news, their gluten free chicken nuggets (GFC) are now available in all Leon restaurants around the country! P.S.: they’re absolutely delicious. Forget McDonald’s and KFC, if you miss chicken nuggets then I highly recommend these. They’re so tender and juicy and go perfectly well with their (also gluten free) spicy baked chips.
