UPDATE: sadly Amigos has now permanently closed down at this address.
I actually discovered AmigosΒ a few yearsΒ ago, but never got around to talking about them on my blog. And frankly I feel like it’s about time because this takeaway is not only delicious, but it’s a fantastic option for us gluten free people. Most of their menu is either gluten free or can be adapted! And although the Islington scene keeps growing and become more popular, I never hear anyone mention Amigos. So if you love Mexican food and live or find yourself around the area, go give these guys a try!
It’sΒ smack bang between Highbury & Islington and Holloway Road tube stations, about 6 mins walk from each. But bear in mind that this place is first and foremost a takeaway. There are a few stools and one table inside, but I’ve never seen anyone eat there, nor do I know if they actually let people eat in. I suspect they’re moreΒ for waiting customers picking up their orders in person.
But nevertheless, their food is excellentΒ andΒ they have a tonne ofΒ gluten free options on their menu. SoΒ if you don’t live close enough to order and are just passing by, it’s still a brilliant place to grab food on the go! Besides fajitas and burritos (those are sadly not gluten free), almost everything elseΒ is ok from tacos to enchiladas to quesadillas. π
My all time favourites have to be the empanadas! Which come with the best combination of dipping sauces ever: sour cream, guacamole and salsa verde. Seriously that salsa verde combined with the sour cream is just heaven! π
But be very careful before ordering these! They’re marked as gluten free on the menu because they technically are, but they’re actually fried in the same fryer as the gluten containing breaded jalapeΓ±o peppers… I hadn’t been to Amigos in absolutely ages and it didn’t use to be the case back then.
After questioning them about it, they were helpful and offered to fry my empanadas in a separate pan with brand new oil. I think that’s awesome as most restaurants don’t do that in my experience! AndΒ not being able to have the empanadas would have made me seriously sad. lol
So yeah, make sure you question them and let them know the seriousness of your gluten free requirements before ordering. And if you order anything deep fried, make sure you ask them what else is fried in the same oil and whether they can fry it separately for you.
But otherwise, they’re clued up on gluten, friendly, accommodating and I’ve never had a problem. As a bonus, their prices are prettyΒ good too! Two empanadas + dipping sauces, for example, are Β£4.50. And there is no extra charge for gluten free options. π

Oh amazing! Thanks for this I love mexican food. I’ll have to try it next time I’m around there.
Brilliant, definitely worth a try if you find yourself in the area! π
Wow I’ve not heard of them before. I love Mexican food but it’s often a case of a salad or rice bowl which is no fun. Love they can offer gluten free. Will have to hunt them out π
Oh I know what you mean! This place is awesome and has much more than salad and rice for sure. I can’t wait to try the quesadillas next. π
